Senior year of high school and I was supposed to come up with a blurb to go next to my yearbook picture – I chose a quote instead –
“Happiness is as a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” Nathanial Hawthorne
I was reading an article in Runners World the other day about Bill Rodgers and the Boston Marathon and was reminded again of this quote. If you had asked me in 1999 what this quote meant I would have probably said that some day my turn will come and I will find happiness – I just have to be patient and wait for it.
10 years later I finally realized that you aren’t supposed to sit around and wait for happiness! Take a moment to sit down quietly instead of chasing that elusive butterfly – look all around you – you might just see that it decided to land right in front of you. I did.
Life and running truly are about the journey and not just the destination.
“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard, because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with“
