Saucony Ride 13 Review

August 19, 2020 by Dorothy Beal

Sponsored by Zappos

As a long time fan of Saucony, I was excited to try out the new Saucony Ride 13 from Zappos. Years ago, the Saucony Ride was one of my go-to shoes, so I was excited to add them back into my (now cancelled) marathon training rotation!

I’m a neutral runner who rolls a bit to the outside (supinate) so I always run in neutral shoes.

I was able to get these shoes quick and easy thanks to Zappos. I LOVE ordering from Zappos, truly. I can’t tell you how many pairs of jeans I’ve ordered from them over the years. Much less stressful trying them on in the comfort of my own home vs going to a store and getting frustrated. Their shipping is lightning fast and returns are really easy. Their return policy gives you 365 days to return an item! This isn’t my first time ordering running shoes from them and it certainly won’t be the last.

The Saucony Ride 13 is a solid neutral running shoe with a 8mm offset. It’s light enough to do speed work in, but also sturdy enough to handle double digit mileage. I’m sensitive to heavy shoes and this shoe doesn’t feel heavy in my opinion. It’s been raining a lot here lately and even on a longer run in the pouring rain my feet never felt heavy.

If you have been following me for any amount of time, you know that I’m a huge proponent of rotating shoes for injury prevention. You can rotate shoes a couple of different ways – different shoes from the same brand or comparable shoes from different brands.

Even if you currently have a shoe you love, I firmly believe one should always be open to trying something new because you may just find something you love better or equally as much.

One of the things I’ve always loved about the Saucony Ride is that they are comfortable straight out of the box and the Ride 13 was no different.

According to Saucony the changes to this update are:

New PWRRUN cushioning protects from impact with a soft, yet responsive feel underfoot.

TRIFLEX outsole optimizes flexibility

FORMFIT surrounds the foot in 3D comfort, enhanced by 3D-Print overlays.

Engineered mesh provides structure or stretch where needed and enhances breathability.

The previous version of the Ride 13 was the Ride ISO 2.

Zappos carries all four of the colorways the shoe currently comes in!

The color combination I ordered is called Coral/Alloy.

The Ride 13 also comes in a grey color, purple and a bright yellow. When I ran my first marathon in 2003, there weren’t many color choices available in each running shoes. You were told not to pick on color and just buy the shoe that worked for you, which is of course sound advice, but now that running companies are making shoes in more color options you can have both – a shoe that works for you + a cool color you like!

One Step At A Time

June 15, 2020 by Dorothy Beal

I often (all the time) find myself overwhelmed thinking about what I want to accomplish.

It freaks me out because it often (all the time) feels impossible. I have to remind myself continually that before every marathon I think to myself, how am I going to do this? I’ve run 26.2 miles 46 times but it makes it no less scary to me.

Why the marathon comparison – because marathons are something I draw strength from. Running 26.2 miles was impossible for me and now it’s not.

I’ve been working on a some big to me things that are finally coming together a bit. It feels good because these things felt completely overwhelming and impossible months ago. They are a good reminder that when I take things one step at a time, mile by mile I get to the finish line.

Tokyo Marathon Training

February 7, 2020 by Dorothy Beal

The first sentence of a blog post feels the hardest.

Where do you start when there is too much to say?

“You can’t be that kid standing at the top of the waterslide, overthinking it. You have to go down the chute.”

― Tina Fey

Last week I made a mid-week decision to skip speed work in favor of running a 10K race. I figured since it was a step back week that while my legs wouldn’t be fresh, they also wouldn’t feel completely dead. Ran my long run of 14 miles on Friday, took Saturday off and then raced the Potomac River Running For The Love Of It 10K.

Last week’s training looked like this:

Monday: 6 miles

Tuesday: rest day – completely off

Wednesday: 10 miles

Thursday: 11 miles

Friday: 14 miles solo

Saturday: rest day – 3 mile walk with Colton

Sunday: warm up 1+ mile, 10K race (was lazy and didn’t do a proper cool down because I was talking – OOPS)

Last week I purchased one of the PRR Race Passes. It makes the races drastically cheaper if you buy a race pass vs signing up last minute and paying what often feels like an absurd amount for a 5K. I thought the other day was the last day to purchase one, but they are still available online so if you want one, you should snag one before they close it! It’s good for four of their races and saves you up to $115! It’s also good for motivation – I don’t want it to go to waste so I’ll definitely run 3 other shorter races this year, something I want to do more of anyways.

I’ve been testing out various different clothing options for Abbott World Marathon Majors Tokyo Marathon! So far I think I’ve decided on my sports bra, shorts, headband if I need one, and shoes. I have short sleeve and long sleeve options in case it’s truly freezing, but unless it’s colder than last year I’m going with a sports bra and shorts.

I get really hot when I’m attempting to run fast for me. This past weekend I wore less than I wanted to and ended up regretting not wearing even less. I took off my mittens in the first miles and tossed them to a volunteer at mile 5 because I was tired of holding them (I ran back after and got them). I definitely didn’t need the headbands either! Yes, I feel chilly for a minute if the wind blows, but it’s truly worse if I wear more. I sweat so much that it’s better to wear less and deal with it than wear more, sweat and then run in wet clothing.

Life is funny…

I remember when I first start running races back in the early 2000’s there was this man (I won’t be a jerk and name him but if my mom is reading this she knows who I’m talking about) who would always run in shorts. It could be 30 degrees out and there he would be at the start line of the race in split shorts and nothing else. I use to giggle with friends at how absurd it was that he would run in the winter half naked. “Can he please put a shirt on” was a common thought. Now I’m that person who is often wearing less than what everyone around me is wearing. I’m the one having people I don’t know make comments to me about what I’m wearing. Life likes to teach me lessons like that. I shouldn’t have been laughing at that guy, he was just running what he was comfortable in.

We all run differently – some of us run hot, some of us run cold – some of us sweat more than the average man (raises hand) – it’s SILLY to comment on what others are wearing while running. Just because you would be freezing in something doesn’t mean that someone else is. Ditto with the temperature wars – can we stop telling people – that’s NOT THAT HOT or that’s NOT THAT COLD. Unless you live on the actual surface of the sun or find yourself running on the moon often – I think it’s just wise to stop saying – oh that’s not that bad – I have to deal with X. My two cents.

I’m going to start including some apparel reviews/thoughts in blog posts again. I’ve had a couple of people (literally a couple – maybe two of you – haha) reach out and say they would appreciate my thoughts more on what is great and what’s not so great, so they don’t waste their $$. I promise that you can count on me to always be truthful in what I like and don’t like. I don’t want someone recommending something that is a waste of money, so I won’t do that to you!

whenever I am sad I let myself be sad for a day an whenever I am sad I let myself be sad for a day and then I pick myself back up remind myself that running always has been there for me and always will be. it’s the longest relationship I’ve ever had ❤️ “the sun’ll come out tomorrow, it’s only a day away” #irunthisbody
🌊✨ I really like trees & running AND running 🌊✨ I really like trees & running AND running amongst the trees 💚 I’ve kinda been in my head a little lately (little might be an understatement) and I’ve honestly wondered if I’m any good at running. Maybe I was running away for so many years that the pain of a marathon felt like an escape & maybe now that I’m not running away - a marathon might seem hard, like the type of hard I’m not sure I want...but today was one of those runs where my heart was like - stop being silly - you were never running away, you were always running towards the life you wanted. You LOVE MARATHONS & running & all that jazz...being good at running never really mattered anyways...running to me will always be MORE than that ❤️ so yeah...goal for next week is to get out of my head more + HUG more trees 🌳 #lorax #irunthisbody #ihavearunnersbody #divorce

🔥 GIVEAWAY!!! I often get asked what the best s 🔥 GIVEAWAY!!! I often get asked what the best shoes are for running and I honestly can't answer that. There are no BEST shoes. The BEST shoes are shoes that work for your gait pattern and your unique body. I wear neutral shoes because I supinate but a neutral shoe might not work for you. That's why it's important to not only do your research on what shoes might work well for you but to get fit properly by having someone watch you run and assess your running biomechanics. Once you have been fit, you will have a general idea of what shoes will and won't work for you!

Because I want you to have running shoes that work for YOU - this giveaway is for one pair of @asics running shoes of your choice!!

How to enter: Follow @mileposts + @runkeeper (style up to you) and comment below on why you want to win or tag a friend in the comments (extra entries for each person you tag - please only tag actual friends and do so in a separate comment for each entry)
