Going through old photos on my phone I found this picture of Miles and I from the expo the last year I ran Marine Corps Marathon.
I have a lot of REALLY great memories from Marine Corps Marathon. It was my first marathon and the race I can pin point that changed my life. It was also my first marathon after becoming a mom, my first sub four marathon and my first BQ. It remains one of my all time favorite races.
When I look at this photo though, I’m reminded of memories I’d rather forget.
I want to whisper in my ear and give myself a heads up that the race isn’t going to go as planned. That it won’t be what I want but that it will be what I need.
I want to tell myself that much like the marathon there are no short cuts through the tough stuff – you just have to take it mile by mile – walk, run, crawl. You get through it. I’m here on the other side now. I’ve made it through that stuff and lived, I always do. The 10th time I run these 26.2 miles it will be an internal celebration of how far I’ve come and how much more life I have left to live.
I’ll be replacing old memories with new ones and for that I am thankful.
